We need more of this! The California State Fair this week unveiled the winners of its first-ever marijuana competition, reports Marijuana Moment. The Fair awarded 60 trophies and medals to businesses, based on lab testing for quality and cannabinoid profiles.

Officials first announced the competition late last year. The event celebrates California’s marijuana industry. The event highlights gradual normalization of Cannabis as a legitimate business.

“Adding cannabis cultivation, alongside wine, craft beer, cheese and olive oil, was a perfect fit,” State Fair Board of Directors member Jess Durfee said.

More Than 300 Entries

Cannabis companies submitted more than 300 entries in three grow divisions (indoor, outdoor and mixed light). Each division had 10 different categories. Those categories were based on cannabinoid concentrations for components such as CBDa, CBGa and THCa. Six terpenes, including Myrcene, Limonene and Pinene, counted in the competition. Among the winners are MOCA Humboldt, Esensia and Greenshock Farms.

The California-based SC Labs conducted the laboratory testing for the competition. The Fair’s page listing awardees includes the lab’s “PhytoFact” report. The reports break down cannabinoid profiles, aromas and flavors and effects associated with the tested products.

Various levels of terpenes and other trace volatile compounds are present in any given cultivar.

MOCA Humboldt, Esensia, Greenshock Farms Win Big

Eureka-based MOCA Humboldt shined in the indoor cannabinoid categories, receiving two coveted Golden Bear awards. Similarly, Mendocino-based Esensia dominated the outdoor Terpenes division receiving two Golden Bear awards for Terpinolene and beta-Caryophyllene. Also noteworthy was Greenshock Farms, winning Golden Bears for Ocimene and CBDa.

“This relationship lends legitimacy to our industry and provides us an opportunity to educate people about the many benefits of the cannabis plant,” said MOCA Humboldt Vice President of Marketing and Sales Aaron Salles.

The California State Fair awarded Golden Bear trophies (also known as “Best of California” trophies per tradition) to the top Gold Medalists from each Category, regardless of Division.

The California State Fair will feature the award winning marijuana products at a 21-and-older exhibit. The Fair takes place from July 15-31. Adults will learn about the science of Cannabis and the history of ganja cultivation in the Golden State.

The rules don’t allow onsite consumption or sales of weed.

New York Soon?

California’s food and agriculture code created the California Exhibition & State Fair as an independent state agency established by law.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is an ex-officio member of the fair’s board of directors, as are several state lawmakers.

On the other coast, ahead of last year’s New York State Fair, officials announced a big change. With Cannabis now legal, adults can consume weed in any place tobacco use is permitted.
