2025 Concentrates Special: Tools of The Trade

While smoking devices continually evolve, arguably, the dab tool has stayed closer to the world of craft.

When it comes to smoking hash, we’ve come a long way from butter knives on the stove. Those blackened paddles were once a mainstay. And while smoking devices continually evolve, arguably, the dab tool has stayed closer to the world of craft. Here are some of the ways people are putting their unique spin on this essential yet classic object.

Canablades

These are miniature versions of classic weapons from around the world. We asked him what was the craziest recreation he’s ever made. “I’d have to say the Dragon Spear,” he answered. “It’s a solid, hand-carved piece of gold-dyed curly maple with a tanzanite eye, custom-fitted to a 7,500-year-old black bog oak staff.”

DMK 710

True dream-makers, these German crafters launched in 2021 with a goal to tailor custom dab tools to match the headiest pieces popping up in private collections. I personally have a magnetic Apex Ancillary tool from DMK with the disembodied heads from “Spirited Away.”

Antoine Pochon Knives

Arguably the most popular dab tool I’ve seen in Europe, these feature titanium, stainless and Damascus-patterned steel with handles of exotic wood and mammoth ivory. Antoine said he was inspired to create more than the sword style he kept always seeing online.

Snuff Glass

A favorite with photographers, Snuff attributes this reputation to focusing on how a tool looks from a macro level as well as in your hand. “I use my eye for detail to create something that contains visually pleasing subtle nuances,” they told us.

Cellini & Co.

Handcrafted in the Bay Area, Cellini & Company are the Ollivanders of dab tools. Started in 2018, Cellini himself produces each one in his workshop, matching the perfect combinations of shaped wooden handles, brass fittings and stainless steel tips.

Tenacious Tools

Each Tenacious Tools collection showcases a different way of opening like an actual blade. Their maker told Leaf that each style draws a lot of inspiration from his experiences collecting and studying custom, high-end knives.

The Terpshank

These handcrafted, stainless steel tools are modeled off of a hand-forged cheese knife. Their creator, Bubba, told Leaf Magazine, “I really liked the aesthetic of the shaping and instantly knew I wanted to turn it around.” These are the luxury vehicles of the hash community.
