Soft-spoken, humble, and knowledgeable, Matt Slate of Slate Glass works with a torch as though he’s taming a fiery phoenix being born from the molten glass, while turning many smaller pieces into beautiful and functional pieces of art. We’ve seen him at several large Cannabis events doing live demonstrations of his work, as well as collaborations with other artists from Rhode Island up to Maine.
Matt started learning how to blow glass seven and a half years ago, paying someone 50 dollars a lesson – slowly investing his money until he had enough equipment to build and start his own studio. He’s been blowing glass ever since, earning quite the following of glass collectors who rave about the quality of his work.
He designs in his head, as he says he can’t draw, so being able to create this way is the only way he knows. To watch him control the glowing glass within the fire is something to behold!
Matt finds it very fulfilling to be able to provide for his family with his glass artwork. He and his wife and daughter recently moved into a larger house, and have a newborn on the way he’s excited to meet and hold.
