Crank the Grateful Dead vinyl up to 11 for this one on Father’s Day.
California hash lovers, young and old, get a shot at some rare, single-source, pressed Vietnamese hash this month at select retailers across the state and at SF Hash Week in July.
Coming straight from the fields of northern Vietnam to your hash pipe, First Cut Farms’ Vietnamese Full-Melt Bubble Hash comes packaged in brown 1-gram squares. There are only 500 of these for California’s roughly 4 million regular smokers.
Had enough of getting couch lock from hybrid indica extracts on the market? Jerry Munn, co-owner of First Cut Farms, said that the Vietnamese “doesn’t really slow you down.”
“It’s very happy, calm, serene and upbeat,” First Cut Farms co-owner Patty Noble said. “It’s like your vacation plane is landing at your beach resort, and you’re super stoked about it.”
The journey to one of the only terpinolene-dominant pressed bubble hashes in California began in 2015. One of Munn’s friends brought him some landrace seeds from the Red River valley in northern Vietnam.
Munn hunted the seeds in 2017, found his keepers and made some personal hash of it. In 2022, heady bidders at a Mendocino auction “went crazy for it,” Munn said. “I was like, ‘OK, I have to do a copy of this for the regulated market.’”
The 2025 outdoor season yielded both fresh-frozen and dried-and-cured flower, which Munn washed, freeze-dried and mixed. Heat-pressing the sandy blond mixture in a mold caramelized, fused and darkened the resin to a cocoa brown. The soft resin is rich in oils and carries a smell similar to a Tootsie Roll. Store it in a cool, dark place to maintain that taffy consistency.
When asked about the best way to smoke this special release, Munn said beginners might find it easiest to break off a chunk and use the hash as a topper on a bowl of flower. Those looking for something more potent should try taking a good-sized chunk and rolling out a thin snake of hash on a bed of flowers in a joint. You can also dab it, though it will leave more of a residue if you’re used to rosin.
First Cut Farms’ Vietnamese Full-Melt Bubble Hash smokes like a scrumptious Durban, with church-basement and Ovaltine-esque piff terpenes.
