Flex Panther and Baja Blasteroid

from Crawn Co.

While these strains have some forebears in common, the expressions and accompanying experience are vastly different.

It’s not double vision, and no, you’re not tripping. Tune in, turn on and drop a fat bud in a bowl because this month’s flower review features not just one but two exciting strains from Oregon-based brand Crawn Co.

Flex Panther, a cross of Flaming Hot Cheetos and Trapzilla, is a Cheetah Piss-based selection that manages to check all the boxes while maintaining an old-school profile. It possesses just a touch of earthy, savory gas accented by a fierce undercurrent of sour lemon. The gassiness in the profile is a piquant, tastebud-stimulating funk, likely hailing from the “burger” strains in its lineage. In contrast, the citrus present is incredibly astringent and tart, comparable to a mix of paint thinner, acetone and Lemonheads. In terms of the high, the cultivar leans toward energizing, featuring an effect that is both uplifting and cognitively keen.

Baja Blasteroid, a cross of Permanent Lee-Hi and Trap Fuel, is a Permanent Marker-esque strain with heftier yields and an avalanche worth of trichomes on each bud. Aptly named, it exudes a limey, sour fruit rind scent saturated in a lingering aura of earthy relish. Denoted by sharpened overtones of citrus, cherry and sugar, it’s a sweetened expression that’s both light and refreshing to the palate. As the flower burns, it manifests a tingling, lightly numbing texture that can be felt on the tongue throughout inhalation. Effect-wise, the cultivar is intoxicating, inducing a satisfying, physiological high paired with a smooth cerebral feeling.

Of particular interest, both selections were created by Oregon breeder Stardust Cult Genetics. While Baja Blasteroid and Flex Panther have some forebears in common (namely Lee-Hi Larry, a powerhouse of a genetic also bred by Stardust Cult Genetics), the actual expressions and accompanying experiences of each strain are vastly different.

Cannabis breeding can produce such diverse traits and outcomes, but even with similar hereditary touchstones, the end product can vary significantly. What traits are most important, and are they going to show up in a desirable way? Will the presentation lean toward one parent or the other? The sheer amount of seeds being popped and phenotypes being hunted to bring worthwhile genetics to market is certainly not microdose-sized.

In that way, it’s captivating to see how Stardust Cult Genetics’ strain selection and Crawn Co.’s determination for quality can bring out the potential in the plants they grow. Whether it’s Baja Blasteroid poised to crash into the tastebuds or Flex Panther reviving the old school with a cool new twist, consumers are the real winners when Oregon-based farms and breeders work together.
