A special collaboration, featuring three decorated Humboldt farms, dropped at this year’s SF Hash Week. Called “Taste of Humboldt,” it’s the story of legacy outdoor farming told through 3 grams of beautifully packaged solventless rosin.
Hannah Whyte, who runs Emerald Queen Farms with partner Riley Morrison, said the idea was born from a desire to collaborate on more projects that bring farmers together to tell Humboldt’s unique story.
Emerald Queen Farms, together with Southern Humboldt’s Mattole Valley Sungrown and Huckleberry Hill Farms, created a set that shows off the power of sun-grown rosin through flavors that are very exclusive to the area.
“The Taste of Humboldt is a representation of the terroir of our three farms — the taste of place!” Dylan Mattole, owner/operator of Mattole Valley Sungrown, told the Leaf.
The three flavors in this box represent not just the distinct soil and climate of these outdoor farms but also their community.
Huckleberry Hill Farms founder John Casali said, “The story of Whitethorn Rose is the story of a community that persevered through the worst eras of prohibition when cops were rappelling from helicopters to cut plants.”
Even the custom, gold-foiled box is an art piece that speaks to their surroundings, with crisscrossing lines that represent a valley near the Mattole River.
Talking with its designer, artist Erin Hamilton, she told the Leaf: “They wanted a sophisticated, subtle nod to the terroir of Humboldt County, and looking around for inspiration, I found an old topographical map, which we incorporated into the basis of the design.”
A team effort, Hamilton and Royal Key LLC co-founder Josh Vert — along with Kalya Extracts, who joined forces with them a year ago — washed the project.
“Kalya’s proprietary solventless process was key to preserving the integrity of these three distinct phenos, each grown in its own terroir,” Vert said.

Whitethorn Rose
Paradise Punch and Lemon OG, Whitethorn Rose is described as a flavor that’s funky yet floral, and it has an aroma that carries notes of orange peel, lavender, pastry dough and even freshly tilled soil. Highly decorated and world-renowned for the way the taste and smell translate into both flower and rosin, this is a true Humboldt gem.
Queen’s Chem
This Chem Dawg and Skunk No. 1 cross has been Emerald Queen Farm’s primo, Chem-forward cultivar for the last six years. Morrison described their first solventless release as “a pungent, gassy aroma, with high notes of pine and a steady skunk on the baseline.” He also pointed out its popularity springing from the “relaxing yet energetic high.”
Paradise Rose
Having won multiple awards, Paradise Rose is well on its way to living up to its family history. It is a cross of Whitethorn Rose and Paradise Pine, which crosses Whitethorn Rose to its parent Paradise Punch, and was bred by Huckleberry Hill Farms. Mattole told the Leaf, “The flavor is sweet and floral, with nostalgic, old-school undertones.”
