Halloweird: Eat, Drink, and Be Scary

"The very definition of squad ghouls."

Halloweird is Leaf Magazine’s hottest and newest annual party. Taking place on Sunday, Oct. 27, this year’s soiree served as the magazine’s inaugural celebration of Samhain. Cedarville Lodge in Gresham, Oregon, hosted the party, welcoming guests to its 11 scenic acres for the ghoulish occasion. Featuring a heated lodge and a spacious outdoor area with covered pavilions, the setting was superb for a stoney spooktacular.

The programming for Halloweird offered plenty of opportunities for mischief. Outdoor attractions included ax throwing, a tattoo bus and spacious consumption areas. In terms of food options, Nauchex and Fat Kid Food Co. were available on-site, serving up munchies that looked similar to the kind of fare Shaggy and Scooby would think up after a couple of doobies. Inside the lodge, lines formed around a photo booth, an open bar and a mainstage area where awards took place later in the evening. Recreational Cannabis brands and craft vendors set up individualized spaces across the function. Some highlights included the Whitney Harmon and Street Kitty Glass oddities booth, edible drink bars sponsored by Crown B Alchemy and Mule Extracts, and a caramel apple dunking experience with Sauce Extracts.

The festivities crescendoed with a Leaf-sponsored competition presenting awards for Best Overall Costume, Best Team Costume, Stoniest Costume, Best Budtender Costume, Best Branded Pumpkin, Best Branded Booth and Best Haunted Booth. Some of the winners of the costume contests included a biblically accurate Bob from “Bob’s Burgers” and a creepy killer clown complete with face paint. Beehive Extracts won for Branded Pumpkin, while Sauce Extracts and Truth Dispensary took home the awards for Best Branded and Best Haunted Booth, respectively.

Throughout the night, the vibe at Halloweird was nothing short of immaculate. Seshes were going left and right, drinks were flowing and music was bumping. Horror classics like “The Shining” and “Scream” played on TVs in the background. The affair had a real “haunted-house-party-in-the-woods” atmosphere, reminiscent of an ’80s slasher flick — though in this case, it was more of a “hasher” flick. Some things were certain: smiles, laughs, and genuine social connections were seen all around, and it was heartwarming to witness unity in the community. The collective “taking a load off” that these kinds of gatherings allow is exceedingly special and worth acknowledging. Catching up and toking with friends at a Leaf party is always a treat, but adding a Halloween theme into the mix is the very definition of squad ghouls.

Events like these aren’t possible without the commitment of sponsors and the unrelenting support from the Cannabis community. Most amenities and activities at Halloweird were completely free of charge to attendees, which is a testament to the brands championing the celebration. A monumental amount of gratitude to all the ghosts and goblins who came out to make the first Halloweird not just a certifiable monster mash, but one of the best Cannabis events of the year.
