Green Jar Alaska’s Jonathan Lovelace

"Being able to grow, manufacture and sell Cannabis with my friends is the ultimate goal."

When he’s not behind the counter slinging heaven’s medicine, you can generally catch him in the mountains shredding the gnarliest powder line, or on the local ice rink wheeling benders. He loves a good walk in the park and ice cream at the beach, but nothing butters him up more than a puff of some good hashish and quality vibes from live music at the local dive bar.

Not only do you budtend at the great Green Jar, but you’re also employed at Matanuska Medicine Woman. You’re a busy guy.
Yeah, I love being able to work for my two buddies at the cultivation and really dive into the many facets of operations. I get to take a lot of the knowledge they’ve learned from their grandmother, the medicine woman herself, Vanessa Liston. I get to do just about everything there is to do in a cultivation like pruning the plants, trimming, applying natural amendments into the soil, top-dressing the plants, watering – the works.

I would imagine that really gives you a lot of experience to elevate your ability to tend bud…
100%. People want an educated budtender who knows how quality weed is grown.

Do you ever see yourself having your own enterprise one day in the Cannabis space?
Potentially. MMW is a place where I love to be and I love Green Jar as well, so I’m in no hurry to go anywhere currently. Being able to grow, manufacture and sell Cannabis with my friends is the ultimate goal – so whether it’s mine or someone else’s business isn’t as important as just doing what I love.

You’ve grown up with the two fellas you work for at MMW since the 6th grade. What’s one of the most classic stories you can provide from those early days?
I’d say just being caught smoking weed at a young age and getting a spanking for it from Mom.

Would Mom still spank you for smoking weed?
Not as long as it isn’t in public. But she’s coming around.

About Mike Ricker

The first time Ricker smoked weed was at a Santana concert at the age of 12. He then followed in his footsteps as an award-winning radio personality who became notorious for offering a stage for bong toking listeners in 9 different markets over 20 years. In 2016, the Cannabis industry came calling and the rest is history.
