Tannins and Terpenes Pairing: S’mores Mushroom Bar and Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa

Mushrooms and chocolates pair wonderfully together, with the flavor and texture complementing each other.

The Tannins

Moonstruck Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa
Hot Cocoa is an ancient treat that dates back to at least 500 B.C., when Mayans were grinding up cocoa seeds and mixing them with water and other ingredients, including cornmeal and peppers. Our modern version of hot chocolate came into fashion in 1828 when the first cocoa powder was extracted. This also led to the first chocolate bar, which was made by combining cocoa powder and cocoa butter that had been separated from the cacao seeds. While this is a lot of chocolate history, it sets the stage for cold fall nights with hands warmed by a steaming cup of hot cocoa.

The Terps

Close Encounter Confections S’mores Mushroom Bar
Made with full fruiting bodies (this means mushrooms) that are homogenized into the chocolate, these bars are made in small batches in a craft environment, without any mushroom extracts or mycelium filler. The bars have premium ingredients, including couverture milk chocolate, graham cracker crumbles, and the same mini candy marshmallows that are found in instant hot cocoa. With an eighth of fruiting bodies in the bar, a single square is a starting microdose, while those seeking more immersive experiences can eat up to a whole bar for a hero dose. Close Encounter Confections always uses a multi-strain blend of mushrooms for a balanced, entourage-style experience with a wider array of effects and potency.

The Pairing

Mushrooms and chocolates pair wonderfully together, with the flavor and texture complementing each other for a delicious experience that is nothing like eating a raw mushroom. These bars taste like gourmet coffee shop chocolate, with a smooth and soft bite, a perfect kiss of graham cracker and marshmallow delivering a layered mouthfeel. There’s no hint of the psychedelic treat inside, so it’s hard to start with one square, but eaten with a rich and warming cup of cocoa sends the mind and body into a floaty, gentle euphoria that’s sparkly and slightly trippy. Eating a few more squares enhances the effects, launching a full trip that’s stable, dosed and consistent — perfect for a fall melt by the fire.

About Wes Abney

Wes Abney is the founder and CEO of the Leaf Nation brand family, which began in 2010 as Northwest Leaf magazine. Recognized as the first Cannabis publication in the region, Northwest Leaf defined and developed the medical and recreational Cannabis communities in Washington with free publications focused on quality content and truthful journalism. The model’s success has led to Oregon Leaf in 2014, Alaska Leaf in 2016, Maryland Leaf in 2019, California Leaf in Spring of 2020, and Northeast Leaf in Fall of 2020. Wes’s writing and publishing background began with his college newspaper, The Ebbtide, which included a love for multimedia and creating content on many platforms. The nickname “Bearded Lorax” came after years of publishing millions of free magazines, using his voice to speak for a plant and those that benefit from it. Wes is an activist not only for Cannabis but for alternative medicine treatments, ending the drug war and freeing prisoners who have been wrongfully incarcerated for non-violent crimes. His passion for reaching people with written and spoken words led to the concept of Leaf Life Podcast in partnership with Mike Ricker, which began development in 2018 and launched in January 2019. With the combined passions of Cannabis and a love for broadcasting, the creation of Leaf Life was a natural progression for Leaf Nation as it spread roots across the United States. With over 100 shows recorded, and printing over 100,000 monthly copies, Leaf Nation has become the world’s largest Cannabis media company, while still celebrating the humble roots and truthful journalism that the model was founded upon. Beyond leading a team of 40+ passionate Cannabis creatives, Wes is the father to two beautiful daughters and two furry cats. He lives in Seattle, drinks coffee, and enjoys Cannabis daily, and hopes to eventually transition from a successful Cannabis journalist to a classic coffee shop author as the Leaf continues to grow in the coming decades. In true Lorax fashion, he enjoys hikes in the forest, communing with nature, and reminding people that “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
