Where did you grow up?
In Key West, Florida. Then I moved to Oregon to get into the Cannabis industry before heading south to San Diego, where I’ve been for three years.
Jimmy Buffet’s music is everywhere in Key West. How did his recent passing affect you?
I actually worked at a Margaritaville restaurant on and off for a couple of years. My mom is a huge Jimmy Buffet fan, so I grew up with his music, and it’s safe to say that it was encoded into my psyche long before I started working for the man. I rolled an extra big one for the legend when I heard of his death.
How does the vibe in San Diego compare to the vibe in Key West?
This reminds me of home in a number of ways. Like Key West, everyone feels like your neighbor here, which kind of mirrors island life. Hospitality is big in San Diego and people are just happy to live in the sunshine, which goes hand in hand with Cannabis culture. I love where I grew up, but eventually, you’ve got to get off the island and venture out. One big difference I should note, however, is that I went to several job interviews wearing flip-flops and board shorts – which didn’t get received too well. Hey, I wore a shirt! (laughs)
Klover is the closest shop to San Diego International Airport. How great is that?
We have a melting pot of customers who come through here every day, and I love it because every story is different. Every month, I have regulars who live across the country and the first thing they do is come to Klover to find their happy place. It’s nice to recommend to them a product I would want myself when getting off the plane. And then to see them a month later, and they nod their head before we even start talking to one another? That’s golden.
Do you love key lime pie?
Yes … but I prefer it on a stick and dipped in chocolate.
